…reading these, a lovely way to spend an evening?…

…curiosity once piqued, and satisfied…

WaPo again surprises with the nice use of maps to convey information and analysis. 40 more maps that explain the world. Nice follow up to its first series of maps…

And from the Telegraph, we recognise,or have confirmed, that many belief systems can have common, even identical, elements, however distant the societies. In this case, we have the story of Noah’s Ark: the facts behind the Flood, with another Noah of another society as the hero. [Identifying the animal couples must have been quite a challenge; not to mention, feeding them,or not having them feed on others]…

For la pièce de résistance, we have the very recent offering of Dean Baker and Jared Bernstein with their joint publication, Getting Back to Full Employment: A Better Bargain for Working People. This is a very accessible and clearly explained analysis of the state of the US economy and the entrenched unemployment, with their recommendations to achieving full employment.

While for some of us of ‘the (very) old school’ the hardcopy is useful for that page turning and annotating, Baker and Bernstein have done us all another great favour. They have made the available in PDF gratis, as well as in e-book at a price. Once the concept of NAIRU is down pat, and the fact that definitions do matter is appreciated, it’s off to the races.

Quick thing: definitions of unemployment vary by the elements that comprise each definition. So the U3, is the more general, ‘headline’, measure of those actively seeking full-time employment but cannot find any, while U6, includes elements such as those who have left the labour force or work part-time though seeking full-time. All better explained in the book.

The abundant charts do clarify and reinforce the analysis. The well-honed art of communicating complex topics with clarity and concision is evident.

Of course, it would be presumptuous to say this is ‘A lovely way to spend an evening’, better, may be to spend a pleasantly informative evening…
