…illusory exceptionalism, god bless, and all that…

Over at Common Dreams is an exceptional post on exceptionalism, that clinging delusion that drives the chaos in today’s world. This from Bernard Weisberger, also a collaborator with Bill Moyers & Co.

Taking Exception to Exceptionalism

But why us alone? That cued the final trumpet flourish. “That’s what makes America different,” said the president. “That’s what makes us exceptional. With humility, but with resolve, let us never lose sight of that essential truth. Thank you. God bless you. And God bless the United States of America.” Pleased as I was with the outcome and its sequel so far, I couldn’t help thinking of George M. Cohan’s remark that “many a bum show is saved by the American flag.”

As one is tortured by the tiresome rhetoric of the Obama lot and the exceptional legislators of bellum eternum, the comforting vision of Prof Frankurt’s classic essay beckons. But for a salutary lapse in the Administration’s reckless zeal for war, death and destruction would have been by now inflicted on the people of Syria and their neighbours, with those predictable consequences so blithely ignored by the intended beneficiaries.

And thanks to the lapse, the civilised world has recently learned of the bona fides of an ‘established and much quoted Syria expert’ , Dr Elizabeth O’Bagy – neither PhD nor expert. Indeed, the Judith Miller du jour  – but now without the media orchestrated ‘Shock and Awe’. What a difference a moment of sanity makes. Of course, there is the question of the profitable need to replace and modernise weapons; and there is that ‘enemy’, and just like Hitler.

With humility. Exceptionalism. An illusion.
